Dr. Ming Liu | Director

Ming Liu was born in Zibo, Shandong. He is an IEEE senior member. He received the BA degree in Automation at Tongji University in 2005. During his master study at Tongji University, he stayed one year in Erlangen-Nünberg University and Fraunhofer Institute IISB, Germany, as a master visiting scholar. He graduated as a PhD student from the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering of ETH Zürich in 2013, supervised by Prof. Roland Siegwart. He is now affiliated with ECE department, CSE department and Robotics Institute of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, leading the Robotics and Multiperception Lab (RAM-LAB).

He is a founding member of Shanghai SWing Automation Ltd. Co. He is also coordinating and involved in NSF projects, and National 863-Hi-Tech-Plan projects in China. As a team member, he won the second place of EMAV’09 (European Micro Aerial Vehicle Competition) and two awards from IARC’14 (International Aerial Robot Competition). He won the Best Student Paper Award as first author for MFI 2012 (IEEE International Conference on Multisensor Fusion and Information Integration), the Best Paper Award in Information for ICIA 2013 (IEEE International Conference on Information and Automation) as first author and Best Paper Award Finalists as co-author, the Best RoboCup Paper Award for IROS 2013 (IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems), the Best Conference Paper Award for IEEE-CYBER 2015, Best Student Paper Finalist for RCAR 2015 (IEEE International conference on Real-time Computing and Robotics), Best Student Paper Finalist for ROBIO 2015, Best Student Paper Award for IEEE-ICAR 2017 and Best Paper in Automation Award for IEEE-ICIA 2017; Best Paper Award Finalist for IEEE-CYBER 2018. He won twice the innoviation contest Chunhui Cup Winning Award in 2012 and 2013. He won the Wu Weijun AI award in 2016. He was the Program Chair of IEEE-RCAR 2016; the Program Chair of International Robotics Conference in Foshan 2017; He is the Conference General Chair of ICVS 2017.

Ming Liu’s research interests include dynamic environment modeling, deep-learning for robotics, 3D mapping, machine learning and visual control. He’s particularly interested in the investigation of novel, real-time online approaches in solving mobile robot mapping and navigation. In general, he can be stimulated by research in all robotic and intelligent system fields.

Dr. Jianwen Luo | Assistant Director of IADC

Jianwen Luo received B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Honor School, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2012, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechatronics engineering from State Laboratory of Robotics and System, Harbin Institute of Technology, in 2014 and 2018, respectively. Since Sep. 2010 through Jan. 2011, he visited, Mechanical Engineering Department, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, as an Exchange Student. Since Mar. 2016 through Apr. 2018, he worked with Stanford Robotics Lab, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA, as a joint PhD student. Since Feb. 2017 through May 2017, he worked with University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA, as a Visit Scholar. Since Jun 2020 through Dec 2020, he worked as a PostDoc with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA. Since 2021 through 2022, He worked a Research Associate with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. He was also the PI of legged robot project group with Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS), Shenzhen, China. He is currently working as an Assistant Director of Intelligent Autonomous Driving Center, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Guangzhou. His main research interests focus on motor design and control, autonomous driving, legged locomotion, dynamics control, whole body control, robotic system design.

Dr. Zhijian He

Dr. He is currently a research associate with the Robotics and Multi-Perception Lab directed by Prof. Ming Liu, at the Robotics Institute, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He received his Ph.D. degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) in 2019. He received his master’s degree and bachelor’s degree from Jilin University in 2013 and 2009.

Dr. Xinxing Chen

Dr. Chen is now working as a research associate at the RAM Lab of Robotics Institute, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Xinxing Chen was born in Xiangyin, Hunan. She received her PhD degree and master’s degree from HKUST. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Hunan University. Her research interests focus on the structural displacement monitoring, image processing, and construction site safety monitoring.

Ms. Lu Gan

Gan Lu received both her bachelor and master degree from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. After graduation, she worked as research associate in NTU (Nanyang Technological University) for 2 years. During her staying in NTU, she was invited to attend the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) conference held in Montreal, Canada in 2016. After that, she led the drafting of RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) white paper which was later submitted to CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore). She was also a key member of TM-UAS (Traffic Management of Unmanned Aircraft System) which aims to deliver a low-altitude traffic management solution in segregated airspace. She was in charge of the C2 (Command and Control) in TM-UAS. She led the collaboration between ATMRI NTU and Singapore MI telecom operator, exploring the validity of using cellular network to provide UAS C2 service.

Her research interests include control of UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) and machine learning.
